Happy Paintings

We want happy paintings. Happy paintings. If you want sad things, watch the news.

                                                                                                                                                    – Bob Ross

Painters I know bemoan painting’s many challenges.

“I can’t find the time.”

“I don’t have the skills.”

“I can’t think of a subject.”

“My brushes are no good.”

“My studio is too dark.”

“My muse went AWOL.”

“The news is too depressing.”

I find painting the ideal antidote to the news.

A close second to painting paintings is looking at them. But not just any paintings. Happy ones.

Right now, I don’t have much stomach for unhappy paintings; particularly for angry painters’ political statements, whether addressing racism, misogyny, homophobia, violence, poverty, greed, ignorance, injustice, pollution, war, or nascent fascism.

Give me happy paintings.

I’m not alone in this, at the moment.

Where have you gone, Bob Ross? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
